4 tips for creating a space for yoga practice at home

Our wellness practices moved into corners of our homes five years ago and for lots of us they’ve stayed there. This could be a full time home yoga practice but also alongside being back in studios and community spaces.

There was a fascinating article published last week about the rise of the “wellness room” in our homes. It appears that more and more of us are trying to create spaces to look after ourselves in our houses and this is something that is being echoed in the planning of new build blocks of apartments and communal spaces.

I’m a big believer in us having options as to where we can engage with wellness practices such as yoga and meditation and often setting yourself up at home can be the most accessible time wise and financially.

Of course dedicating an entire room is not necessarily accessible for most of us and it probably looks more like a yoga mat rolled out down the side of the bed (I know that’s my vibe). I believe that we can make even this little corner calm, soothing and inspirational though, in fact it’s the reason Yogipod exists in the first place.

I’ve got some tips for how you can create your sanctuary at home.

  1. Set yourself up in a space that you can close the door on. This will not only hopefully stop anyone you live with disturbing you, but it also gives you the privacy to explore your practice and feel in to any emotions or sensations that that brings up.
  2. Use dimmable lighting or lamps to create a soft, diffused light through the space rather than your central ceiling light. Fairy lights can also be a really special touch
  3. Choose a scent you love and can be the one you use when practicing to set the scene. Then when you light that candle or spritz your room spray you feel like your stepping into a special practice space
  4. Have items that you know make you comfy around you. Of course that could be more traditional props such as yoga blocks or a bolster but this could also just be a couple of favourite cushions and a cosy blanket for savasana or a yoga nidra practice
