Music that hits your soul

Music in a yoga class? Yay or nay? It’s a personal choice but I must admit I am really missing teaching to a playlist right now, feeling that collective energy rise as the tempo does or that sigh that takes over the whole room as the volume dips and slows.

So if like me you’re practicing from home and missing that energy that music gives these are my favourite artists for yoga playlists and my tips on how to put together some playlists.

Tips on putting together a playlist

There is obviously no right and wrong way to put together a playlist, especially when you’re practicing at home, because anything really goes but these are a few things I consider when I’m putting one together.

  • What style of practice you’re putting it together for – a dynamic vinyasa class will probably want a different playlist vibe than restorative for instance
  • Roughly how long you think you’d like to practice for – Obviously this changes all the time but if you have a rough idea you can plan for peaks in your playlist
  • Gather a selection of tracks you think might work together and then play around with the order – for flow classes I like to start with something slower and then gradually build to a more uptempo beat before retreating down for savasana
  • Decide whether lyrics work for you or not – some of us love being able to focus on lyrics others prefer more ambient beats with less of a narrative. Also lyrics can work really well in some places but not in others, personally I find them more distracting in slower more contemplative practices
  • Pick something long for savasana – and longer than you may think you want. There’s nothing worse than an abrupt cut off on a song in savasana so pick something at least 6 or 7 minutes long which ideally has a fade out at the end
  • Pick something that makes you want to move – it seems obvious but really this is all you need to do. Pick a song that always gets you moving, pop it on and begin to wriggle
